Aguirre – Demo (France 2007)

From Aural Innovations #37 (Sep 2007)

A band named Aguirre must have a lot of self confidence. In my world there is only one Aguirre – Klaus Kinski as the ferocious Spanish conquistador ‘Aguirre’ in Werner Herzog’s masterpiece AGUIRRE: THE WRATH OF GOD (1972)! But I got to admit that this French band from Bordeaux is worthy to bear the name. A promising demo with 3 songs in 26 minutes of doomy soundscapes with a hardcore edge and a snarling vocal! You’ll find great arrangements not unlike Cult of Luna and Neurosis but at the same time stripped down brutality in the vein of Corrupted and Grief. This is not a new formula but these guys have created their own universe, a beautiful wasteland you shouldn’t miss. A fine interview with Aguirre (in English) can be found in the excellent Belgian doom magazine ‘Times of Grace III’ (www.timesofgrace.com).
