Blue Drift - "Mariner"
(self-released 2005, CARP787)

From Aural Innovations #31 (June 2005)

I had never heard of this three piece instrumental band. The guitarist comes from the Celtic Rock band, The Morrigans. He is joined by his brother on bass and Arch on drums. The two brothers share the keyboard duties (although there is not that much) This is the bands second release, the first being Cobalt Coast in 2003 (see AI #26). The fretless bass playing lays down a heavy bottom end for the drums and bass to work over the top. The guitar playing is very fast and furious and some of the material is very heavy, a bit like Djam Karet at times. This was a very enjoyable CD and nicely spaced out at times. The lead guitar playing is soulful and not just purely technical. Excellent effort!
