Smoke - "Smoke Follows Beauty"
(Kozmik 2002, KZK-002)

From Aural Innovations #21 (October 2002)

Smoke are a trio from Los Angeles. The bio says the band have been playing the LA Club scene for 3 years. The CD is a concept album that is suppose to take the listener through the unconscious mind of a dying man. The cover artwork was provided by Malleus, who has done some impressive stuff for a lot of different bands now. The band create a very cool fuzzed out groove on most of their songs. The words and lyrics are quite buried in the mix so it is a little difficult to make out what the songs are saying but it is the music that is important. You can hear bits of Mountain, Blue Cheer and BTO throw into the bands mix of 70's inspired songs. You get 9 tracks in 55 minutes, so there are a few tracks where the band space it out and do a bit of playing. The band remind me a bit of the great German band Colourhaze in a way. Pretty cool CD.
