Wasami - Escaping From My New Day Blues" (Finland 2001, CD)

From Aural Innovations #18 (January 2002)

Wasami are another new Finnish band and remind me of the British band Sundial on their later releases. The band have an excellent catchy rock and roll sound but slowly evolve over the release into some fantastic space rock. I don't really care that much for the vocalist much but the music is quite superb. Nice dual guitars and tight rhythms make the music travel. The title track starts things off and is the most straight number on the release. Astronomical intro to Astral Traveling sounds like something you would expect from Dark Sun. A slow guitar layers in over the wind and floating synths and then the music takes off. A very Dark Sun inspired song that I just wish Janne was singing! Next is And Your Words, Gone Too and the bands only ballad. Don't be fooled though, as the song is quite an excellent one. Art Evolution ends the CD and is a Sundial-like song from Reflector but with some nice wind floating around giving the song a bit of an airy feel. The 9 minute song goes through a lot of phases and has quite a heavy ending! I wish I knew more about this band. I could find no email or web page or anything. Santtu from Dark Sun turned me onto them. I look forward to hearing more from this band.
