Heavy Liquid - "s/t" (Buzzbomb Music 2001, CDEP)

From Aural Innovations #15 (April 2001)

Heavy Liquid is a quartet that plays a KICK ASS brand of punked out rock 'n rollin' stoner psychedelia. The band is from New Jersey and consists of Doug on vocals, Trezz on fuzz & wah guitar, Suds on drums, and Jay Liquid on bass. The music on this 3-song CDEP was produced by Phil Caivano of Monster Magnet.

There's lots of influences here. Doug's vocals sound like, and are stylistically similar to David Johansen. The New York Dolls gone Stoner rock? Maybe. Actually it's more like Johansen taking Iggy's place in the Stooges. This is some fiery rockin' stuff. It's too fast and energetic to be labeled Stoner though it's certainly in that mold. We'll call it Stoner rock 'n roll. Trezz's guitar is indeed fuzzed and wah'd, and it just plain rocks out as well. I hear 70's heavy rock, punk, and tripped out psychedelia, all rolled up into one neat ass kickin' package. "Crawlspace" is the true monster of the 3 tracks, and if Heavy Liquid have more tunes like this then I think Meteor City best pay attention because here's their next new signing. Total smash your face in psychedelic stoned rock 'n roll. Stoner rock tends to drag, but Heavy Liquid inject just enough good old rock 'n roll to the tripped out mix to keep things HIGH energy. I'll be looking forward to a full length release from these guys.
